"The rain was pouring down, soaking the avenue, but Egan barely noticed. His damp shirt clung to his torso, marking each deep breath he tried to control. He walked slowly, as if his body were remembering something he'd been trying to ignore for too long. He stopped. The cold pavement beneath his bare feet anchored him right at the point where his mind stopped resisting. A single thought was enough to bring her back to him: her voice close to his ear, the way she approached unhurriedly, the way she looked at him when she wanted him to surrender first.
